Let me introduce you to Rita Ferro (Rita Iron) she is a woman made of steal, that can be felt through her words, her attitude and the way she come across, but she is as well made of many other materials, that’s what makes her so incredibly interesting! She is very well known in the Portuguese literary context, she has written more than 20 novels, she is a writer who once studied Design and Marketing, and she’s been an editor for long years of her career.
Apart from all the amazing things she came bring as an editor, writer, thinker, she totally fit into the Chicas Poderosas mind set. For her, she told me, this new ways of visualizing information were pretty new to her, and she said she learned a lot from taking part on this event. Well all other attendees who had the chance to listen to her had definitely take away some thoughts along.
With no more words I’ll leave you her text, witch she read out loud in a very courageous and enlighting way!
Hello, everybody!
I came all the way from Europe
From a beautiful country
called Portugal
with 10 million people.
With many economic problems
but proud of its achievements.
In the sixteenth century our navigators discovered a huge part of the world.
In the eighteen century we were the world’s first country to abolish slavery.
In the nineteenth century, we were the world’s first country to abolish the dead penalty.
And, recently, in 1974, after 50 years of dictatorship, we fought for democracy and we’ve won, and we are now a free country!
We may be poor, distant and forgotten
but we are very conscious of our power.
And also very proud of our women.
One good example is the beautiful and talented Portuguese Mariana Santos,
who, in a foreign country,
has managed to gather the willing
and the money
to invite all of us
to be here today.
Thank you so much, Mariana, an applause for her, please!
That’s the spirit of women In Portugal.
That’s the spirit of women In the whole planet.
We are not better than men. We don’t say that, we don’t think that,
and, if we think, we don’t like to think it.
We love men. We couldn’t live without them. As parents, as friends, as colleagues, as lovers.
We’ve just suffered more, during too many centuries, and keep on suffering, in so many countries.
But there was a miracle.
Actually, all those tears had blossom
And turn into special flowers,
special powers.
We listen: «women are powerful!»
«women are the future!»
But we must understand why women are so powerful and why women are the future.
It’s not a phrase. It’s not an accident. It’s not a gift. It’s not a circumstance. It’s not an old and surpassed feminist slogan.
It’s a poem. A true one.
It is a strength of our own, developed and raised during millennia.
Here. In Portugal. In Brasil. In Venezuela. In Africa. In japan.
Beeing weaker physically was one of the reasons. One of the secrets.
We couldn’t fight with wrists, because we have less muscles, so we had to discover our own way.
It’s wasn’t easy, because we have serious difficulties.
We bleed during a week by month, for forty long years – a week by month!
We give birth trough the most tiny hole of the universe – with pain!
We breastfeed our children, with pain.
And when we finished our mission, of being wife, mother and grand mother, we have the menopause, which means 10 years of hell and a cruel transformation of our body.
But, my friends, before men become our lovers, our friends or our bosses, they were our children.
We feed them. We raise them. We taught them to talk and to dress themselves – they can’t know us so well, can they?
We know about humankind, because we’ve raised, we breastfed mankind!
And, as I said before, because we have weak muscles, we developed alternative strengths.
We have multitask brains, because we must work and watch our kids at the same time – if we don’t watch, they die.
Again, there is no miracle.
Have you noticed? Men can be good husbands if they don’t drink, don’t spank us, don’t betrayed us with other women – you understand the difference? If they aren’t bad, they are good. They don’t have to be nothing to be something.
Women, on the contrary, to be good wives, to deserve the definition of a «good woman», must have a multitude of qualities:
They must be attractive
They must dress well
They must cook well
They must smell well
They must depilate their legs, their armpits, their groins
They have to provide good sex
They must take care of children – their own, or their husband’s children
They must take care of old people – their own, or their husband’s parents or grandparents
They must know how to run a house in a very economic way
And, last but not least, they must work, because no man can longer decline their money in a household.
Life taught us all these things, but, actually, we could ignore it all, because, at the end of the day, men are right: like men, women are human beings, not services.
When we ask love, we ask it for what we are, and what we think or feel, and NOT in return or in exchange for our services.
We are not employees, but, happily, inspiration. And vice-versa.
Conclusion, we are just like men: we could be nothing, and still be everything.
