Chicas Poderosas, the global community that promotes women leadership in media, opens the call for the México Mediathon #VocesEnAlza (rising voices), where journalists, designers and coders will come together during two days to create journalistic, collaborative projects on issues related to harassment against women that will take place on Saturday November 23rd and Sunday 24th at Centro Cultural de España en México, México City. This event is supported by the United States Embassy in México, Google News Initiative, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The event will gather 100 women journalists, coders, and designers from different parts of the country and from indgenous communities, to tell stories related to the abuses against women in México. To cover this topic, civil society organizations will participate to share information with the participants, and workshops will be offered to give them tools to approach and tell these stories in the formats they chose.
During the two days, the participants will form 10 groups to work on journalistic multimedia projects about abuse with the focus they choose. After the Mediathon, the teams will continue working remotely with a mentor who has editorial experience to conclude the project. The stories then will be published in national and regional media outlets, to make abuse visible in the media and the public agenda.
The call for the Mediathon #VocesEnAlza will be open until October 20th. You can apply to participate here. We will provide scholarships for women who live outside Mexico City to attend; you can request a scholarship in the application form. We will contact the selected participants at the end of october.
