International speakers will dictate a free workshop to deliver tools and guidance on online gender violence. The event, organized by Chicas Poderosas Chile, seeks that journalists, designers, programmers and activists take the first steps to build their online security strategy.
#ChicaSafe: Ciberseguras y En Red
Understanding the phenomenon of harassment, knowing how it affects us, how to act and how to begin to build a digital security strategy are some of the objectives of the upcoming Chicas Poderosas Chile event: #ChicasSafe: Ciberseguras and En Red. The free event will be held this Saturday June 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at LAUNCH Millenium.
The activity is aimed at women linked to the world of digital media, journalists, programmers, designers and activists. To attend, those interested must register in the Chicas Poderosas Chile Meetup in one of the 30 available spots.
Design your security strategy
The main workshop «Design a customized Cybersecurity Strategy», will be in charge of the NGO Derechos Digitales and will be directed by Marianne Díaz, lawyer and activist who has just been awarded by AccessNow in Tunisia as «Heroine of Human Rights of 2018 «, For his work against the surveillance and censorship of the government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela.

Marianne’s work focuses on issues related to freedom of expression on the Internet, surveillance, Internet infrastructure and digital security. In addition to her work as a lawyer, Marianne is a fiction writer, public policy analyst for Latin America of the NGO Derechos Digitales, Creative Commons volunteer and Global Voices volunteer since 2010.
Her workshop will guide us in the most relevant aspects for the implementation of safe and responsible practices in the handling of sensitive data and the use of the Internet, particularly for journalists and communicators.
Participants will receive a copy of the «Micro SD» cards, a tool developed by the Derechos Digitales team with the aim of providing information and better visualizing the main risks and threats to which journalists and activists are exposed, and how to avoid them.
Cybersecurity, women and media
In addition to the security workshop, the Chicas Poderosas event in Chile will feature talks to understand and address gender violence in our work as journalists and in daily life.
The first one, «Cybersecurity with a Gender Perspective», will be delivered from New York by Lu Ortiz, digital shaman and online gender violence expert, Lu is a disruptive communicator, design thinker, nonviolent activist and specialist in gender analysis, political discourse, founder of Nvalabs.org, directs her laboratory of Human Innovation, has trained activists, organizers and actors of social change since 2003.

Then it will be the turn to deepen on the media industry and violence against women, specifically in the world of fiction. The guest to talk about this topic with the community of Chicas Poderosas is the film director and screenwriter Marialy Rivas. Marialy’s first feature film, «Joven y Alocada» (2012) debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, where she won the Best Drama Screenplay Award (World Cinema Screenwriting Award, Drama). Today, from her work as director and screenwriter, she will share her view of violence against women in the world of fiction, a theme that will be central to one of her upcoming audiovisual projects.

Finally, focusing on independent digital media, journalist Marjuli Matheus will tell us about her experience in the implementation of security strategies in online journalism. Marjuli has extensive experience in the development of digital strategies for organizations such as CONNECTAS, a platform for journalistic innovation in the Americas, and for media such as El Pitazo de Venezuela, where he witnessed, in the first line, attacks and attempts of censorship by the government.
